Sell on credit without losing track of the money

Credit lets a trusted customer buy now and pay later. The risk is losing track of who owes what. Here's how to keep every amount and every payment on record.

1. Switch on On account

On account starts off. Turn it on under Business, then Settings, then Payment methods, and confirm the change. Customer credit is a feature a plan can include, so check yours.

2. Give trusted customers a limit

Open the customer and set a credit limit. Without a limit, a customer can't buy on account. The till refuses any sale that would take them over it.

3. Sell on account at the till

Add the customer to the sale and choose store credit when you take payment. The amount goes onto their account.

4. See who owes you

Credit management lists who owes you, how much, and how close they are to their limit.

5. Record payments

When a customer pays, choose Record payment. You can't record more than they owe.

6. Match the money

Credit settlements list what customers paid back. Payment settlements show how they paid: cash, card, mobile money and so on. Use them to check the money against your bank and your drawer.

Habits that help

  • Start with small limits and raise them as customers prove reliable.
  • Open credit management once a week.
  • If you don't want to hand back cash on a refund, refund onto the wallet as a credit note.

Questions people ask

Can a customer go over their limit?

No. The till refuses a sale that would take them over it.

Is there a report of who owes me?

Yes. Credit management lists balances and limits, and the customer reports show the same figures with charts.
